When you "restored" the block characters, you put the UTF-8 ones in, not the CP437 ones. You'll need to fix it a bit harder.
I also not that the indentation in the cleanmode check doesn't line up properly... the code uses an unholy mix of tabs and spaces that you need to match (8-char tabs, 4-char indentation levels)
