I have not watched it in years but, when I was a kid, "Championship
Wrestling" came on for an hour, at Noon, just as cartoons were ending. I didn't watch it until I met some other kids who did, c1982.

I don't remember the name of the "federation" that was represented, but I
think it was "Southeast" or something. Jimmy Hart, Jerry "the King"
Lawler, Dutch Mantell, the Fabulous Ones, Kenya Kondori, Bill Dundee, Sweet Brown Sugar, Sabu, are some I remember. There was also a team of "Swamp"
guys, but I don't remember their nicknames, and a team from "down under" (that didn't include Bill Dundee) that I think were supposedly from New Zealand.
One of them was bald and, IIRC, missing some teeth. The other one mostly grunted and didn't talk (in complete sentences) much.

I watched that every Saturday I was home for a couple of years. One of the girls I was in class with actually went to some of their events at the Louisville Gardens. She was pretty cool. I look back and wish she'd lived closer by.

previously mentioned. I only know of King Jerry Lawler as a ringside announcer, not as a wrestler.

Jesse Ventura used to have a podcast - he spoke about politics most of
the time, but he had Roddy Piper on once - they spent 90 minutes
reminiscing about spending their time on buses wrestling an ungodly
number of times a year, life on the road, performing in high-school
gynmasiums and cheesy venues, and pro wrestling just as it started
getting big. Very interesting.

Roddy Piper was in "They Live", and he and Jesse had a pilot about a
couple of detectives in Hawaii, but it didn't get picked up. Piper
lamented his life would have turned out different if that had been
successful - if not for what turned out to be mostly contract
difficulties between the studio and Sony, if memory serves.

It's definitely worth a listen if you could find it.

Piper passed away not long after they recorded it.

I grew up on UHF TV - I'd love a campy cable channel comparable to the
cheezy b-movies, "pro" wrestling and live roller derby broadcasts.

UHF, by budget and transmission constraints, had a local quality you
don't get any more.

For a while in the '90s,cable providers needed to provide local
access, and you could sign up to essentially rent one of their studios.
A friend of mine had a talk show on cable - they already had a set with
a desk and couch. He had friends fill in as the band and interviewed
guests. We went to one of the filmings, it was a lot of fun.

More low-budget was "Larry, the Security guy". He did private security
for an apartment complex, and mounted a vidcam on the hood of his
go-cart. He'd do monologues while driving around the complex and
interview people at night in the poolhouse.

Lots of campy fun back then.

This would have been c1982. :D The last think I heard Lawler doing was calling an XFL game... the 2001 version. :O :D

We must be around the same age - I remember going to my grandparents
house when my parents went out, and watch Hee Haw or the Lawrence Welk
show. My grandfather loved those shows.

There's a roller derby league in the San Francisco bay area. Not sure
where they play as it's sort of a special rink - you need to pneumatic
cannon to shoot the ball into the playing field, need room for
motorcycles...
